Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1875, the plate illustrates two wedding dresses and two attendants' dresses. It is signed, 'D' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

The two dresses on the left show the fashionable bustle, introduced in the 1870s. All the women have the same hairstyle - hair brushed back and arranged in curls and loops with large chignons (knots or coils of hair worn at the back of the neck).

Adèle Anaïs Toudouze was the second daughter of Alexandre-Marie Colin (1798-1875), a painter and lithographer. Along with her sisters, Héloïse and Laure, she was responsible for some of the most charming fashion plates of the mid-nineteenth century.
