Add to album

This is the obverse of a 1797 copper proof penny trade token of Thomas Webster Junior of Dundee in Angus. Manufactured by Kempson, the token was designed by James Wright Junior. The die-sinker was Willets.

The obverse depicts a series of warehouses on the quay with the arms, supporters and motto of Dundee in an oval underneath. The surrounding text reads 'PUBLIC WAREHOUSES ON THE QUAY/SHIPPING OF THIS PORT 8800 TONS REGR'.

It has been estimated that between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued. Although some pennies were produced, the tokens were issued mainly in farthing or halfpenny denominations.
