Drawing, of pilot of Royal Flying Corps during First World War

This drawing of an unidentified pilot of the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War was made by Eric Kennington, an official war artist who went out to the Western Front in 1917.

Seated in open cockpits, pilots and navigators were exposed to extreme cold. Long leather coats were issued to British airmen, who often added fur collars. Their flying helmets and goggles were similar to headgear then worn by motorists.
