Spearhead
Add to album

This bronze spearhead was found at Clayyard at Machariach on Arran. It dates from between 1500 and 1150 BC.

The short, leaf-shaped spearhead has remains of loops on its long socket and a rivet hole where the spearhead attached to the wooden shaft. Its blade is damaged.

Spears were used both for fighting and for hunting. Some were designed to be thrusting weapons, while other lighter examples were designed to be thrown. Spearheads of this shape are fairly common in Scotland, though moulds are rare.
