A kishie is a basket for carrying grain, made from rushes, floss, straw or bent grass. This example is from Shetland.

Rivva kishie, or pannier, made of semmints hand-wound from rashes or floss, used with maishies and klibber on ponyback, from Shetland

Baskets, carried on the backs of people or ponies were woven from local plants. The same weaving techniques were used in making household containers, furnishings and even parts of buildings.
