Coin (Reverse), 40 pence piece, from reign of Charles IThis is the reverse of a silver 40 pence piece minted at Edinburgh between 1638 and 1642, during the reign of Charles I. The coin was worth three shillings and four pence Scots. The reverse has a crowned thistle, with a small sideways 'F' beside the crown. The Latin inscription translates as: 'The safety of the state is the supreme law'. The 'F' on the coin is the initial of Sir John Falconer, Master of the Mint at this time.
