Roman horns

Drawing for the antiquary Captain Francis Grose in the 1780s titled 'Brazen war horns, Roman, found on the Roman Wall in Scotland'.

These are more likely to be Bronze Age horns, and to have been found in Ireland. Their attribution to Scotland shows the enthusiasm in the late 18th century generated by antiquaries and an interest in early music and concepts of music making by the 'Celts'. These drawings are in the Society of Antiquaries Manuscripts, National Museums of Scotland.
