Fashion plate, from Les Modes ParisiennesThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from Les Modes Parisiennes, a ladies' fashion magazine published in Paris from 1843-75. It is signed, 'Compte-Calix' and 'Bracquet'. The plate illustrates two women in indoor and outdoor day wear. François-Claudins Compte-Calix was the chief fashion plate artist for Les Modes Parisiennes. He was a reputable artist who, for many years, exhibited watercolours at the Paris Salon. He also was the illustrator for a number of books on historical costume.
