This hand-coloured fashion plate is from the Illustrirte Frauen Zeitung, a fashion magazine published in Berlin. The plate illustrates a bride's dress and a wedding outfit and is dated 13 February, 1882. It is signed, 'B.S'.
The line of these 'tie-back' dresses is broken by puffs, shirrings and pleats. The 'egg-timer' look is achieved by corsetry, boning and lacing up the back. The waistlines are tight fitting and extend to a long point.
Fashion plates of wedding dresses appeared in most of the notable fashion magazines every three or six months. They are a quick and easy way to show how fashion trends changed.
