Medal of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts

This gold medal of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts was awarded to John Adie (1805-57) in 1830 for a dew point instrument and barometer cistern. Adie was a son of Edinburgh-based scientific instrument maker Alexander Adie.

The medal is inscribed 'SOCIETY OF ARTS FOR SCOTLAND' and, within a laurel wreath, ' TO/MR JOHN ADIE /Optician/ EDINBURGH/ 1830/ for a/ DEW=POINT INSTRUMENT/ AND BAROMETER CISTERN'.

The Royal Scottish Society of Arts, founded in 1821, encouraged the improvement of 'useful arts and manufactures'. It awarded prize medals each year and over the years Alexander Adie and his sons won a number for their inventions and improvements.
