Ewer associated with John Erskine, Earl of Mar
This crystal and silver gilt ewer is engraved on the lid with the arms of John Erskine, Earl of Mar. It was made between 1565 and 1567 by James Cockie, a goldsmith in Edinburgh.
The ewer is made of cut and polished rock crystal. It has silver gilt mounts in the form of a spreading ogee foot, a tubular scroll handle, and a neck-band with a large beak-like spout and a dome-shaped lid.
James Cockie seems to have been heavily involved in the political troubles during and after the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. He was besieged in Edinburgh Castle and then executed in 1573 for minting coins for the Queen's Party.
