Bowl

This maiolica bowl was made in Italy in 1567, probably in Venice in the workshop of Domenego da Venezia.

The inside of the bowl is painted in polychrome with a depiction of 'The Triumph of Galatea'. Galatea is standing in the centre with a female attendant on the left, both on dolphins. Below is a boy riding a dolphin and behind a sea monster swimming with a nereid holding a billowing drape. To the right, a youthful triton blows into a shell horn, with a second young triton to the left. Above are two winged cupids, one shooting arrows at Galatea.

Galatea, the sea nymph, loved the youth Acis. He, however, was killed by the one-eyed cyclops Polyphemus who was obsessed with an unrequited love for Galatea (Ovid, Metamorphoses, XIII).
