Pot, entitled Elliptical Bowl, by Ian Pirie

This porcelain pot, entitled 'Elliptical Bowl', was made by the Scottish artist Ian Pirie in 1983. It was inspired by the visual relationship caused by the atmosphere between space and our own planet.

The thrown cylindrical bowl form, now elliptical, has an unglazed polished exterior and satin black glazed interior. The exterior decoration is airbrushed with applied transfers in pastel colours.

During the 1980s the Scottish Development Agency purchased a number of hand-crafted items for its Scottish Crafts Collection. The aim of the collection was to inform the public of craft production in Scotland through touring exhibitions and education programmes. When the Scottish Craft Council was wound up, the collection was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland.
