Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des Dames

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate illustrates two day dresses and is dated 15 June, 1849. It is signed 'Mme Florensa de Closmenil'.

Both women are wearing shawls which were very popular in this period. Stiffened petticoats of crinoline (horsehair) would have helped to swell their dome-shaped skirts.

The figures in Madame de Closmenil's fashion plates are placed in sympathetic and agreeable surroundings. She also produced very attractive plates illustrating children's wear.
