Scraper of bone for cleaning hide

This bone scraper was found at Dun an Fheurain in Argyll. It may have been used for cleaning a hide, sometime between 0 and 800 AD.

The scraper was made from a narrow, strap-shaped piece of bone which has been notched at each end.

There were three stages to prepare a skin. First the hide was removed from a dead animal using knives. Next, it was cleaned, by loosening hair and fat, then scraping flesh, muscles and tendons with scrapers such as this one. Then the hide was preserved.
