Spoon or scoop

This bone spoon or scoop was found at Old Cattlefold at Vallay on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. It probably dates from between 0 and 1000 AD.

The small spoon has a broad rectangular bowl and a short slender handle.

Several artefacts of this kind have been found, and their function is uncertain. They may have been used in preparing cosmetics or medicines, or they may have been toys.
