Piper's souvenir handkerchiefPiper's souvenir handkerchief, probably dating from the 1930s, of synthetic silk overprinted on one side with a border of thistles, vignettes in the four corners of sets of Highland bagpipes and a series of twenty miniature portraits based on contemporary photographs of leading pipers including in the centre 'Pipe Major John MacDonald MBE / Inverness / Hon. Piper to H M the King'. Pipe Major John MacDonald (1865 - 1953) was regarded as one of the greatest players of piobaireachd of his age. He came from a noted piping family and was taught piobaireachd by Malcolm Macpherson of Catlodge, Badenoch. He won the Gold Medals at Inverness in 1890 and at Oban in 1897 and for a period of about 20 years won all the major piping prizes. He was made MBE in 1935.
