Teapots or coffee potsThese two earthenware tea or coffee pots were made in the late 19th century, probably by Charles Belfield's Pottery at Prestonpans in East Lothian. The pots have a brown Rockingham glaze, D-shaped handles and knop finials on the lids. Pottery has been made in Scotland since prehistoric times, but it was not until the 18th century that domestic pottery began to be mass produced on an industrial scale. By the early 1800s, potteries in Musselburgh, Portobello and Prestonpans, all near Edinburgh, were producing a wide range of wares, from soft-paste porcelain to transfer-printed earthenware.
