Scottish pistol, snaphaunce, brass, 1615 James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, was one of Scotland's most successful and feared generals of the 17th century. With the backing of a Highland army, Montrose was able to threaten the government of Scotland. During the Wars of the Covenant, Montrose and his ally Alasdair MacColla led an army of Highland and Irish soldiers to a string of remarkable victories over Covenanter armies before his eventual defeat in 1645.
