Model, of fishing vessel FavouriteThis wooden model represents the fishing vessel 'Favourite' LK 1077. Built in 1869, 'Favourite' was used for fishing and for carrying provisions and mail to Fair Isle. The model was built to a scale of 1:12 by Mr J Shewan of Lerwick in Shetland. For many centuries, in the narrow waterways of the Shetland islands, the Viking type of boat construction with a nearly-square sail was the only one known. However, contact with the mainland resulted in the adoption of improved fore-and-aft rigged vessels, such as this one. Such rigs allowed increased manoeuvrability. 'Favourite' therefore represents a transitional stage in the development of a popular Shetland craft. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
