Sculptured stoneThis sculptured stone was found at the site of the Roman fort at Castlecary in Stirlingshire. It was perhaps part of a decorative frieze for a shrine or temple dedicated to local woodland gods and goddesses. It was carved between 140 and 165 AD. A hunting scene has been carved on the stone, with deer and archers within a wood. Roman soldiers enjoyed hunting and fishing for sport. Hunting scenes are depicted on various Roman objects, including bowls, cups, finger rings and large sculptures. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
