Basket (reconstruction)

This basket was made from willow using traditional methods and techniques such as early people in Scotland might have used. Although no baskets survive, such baskets would have been essential for the hunter-gatherer-fisher population who moved throughout the countryside.

The basket was woven from willow. It has a strap made from deer hide, to enable it to be carried, either over the shoulder or across the brow.

Modern attempts to duplicate the skills and objects of early people have led to increased understanding - and respect - for their methods. Such reconstructions also help archaeologists interpret the discovered remains.
