Miniature of a Highland officer, by George EngleheartThis miniature portrait shows an officer, probably of the 3rd Argyllshire Fencible Infantry, and was painted by George Engleheart, 1798 - 1802. Miniatures were sometimes carried as keepsakes: you can see the loop for carrying it on a chain or cord. 3rd Argyllshire Fencible Infantry was one of a series of infantry regiments raised solely for the defence of the British Isles between 1793 and 1802. Governed according to army regulations, these regiments of Fencibles served only in Great Britain and Ireland. George Engleheart (1750 or '53 - 1829) studied at the Royal Academy Schools and was a pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds. He was one of the finest miniaturists of the 18th century.
