Locket (front), associated with James VIII, Old PretenderThis is the front of a gold locket decorated with the initials 'JR 8' in gold wire which refers to James VIII, 'The Old Pretender'. The locket was gifted to J. Grant by Lord Huntly in 1802. Above the initials is an embossed and coloured crown. The crown and initials are surrounded by a looped gold wire border. James VII died in 1701 and his son was recognised as king of England and Scotland by King Louis of France. In 1719 James VIII married the daughter of the King of Poland.
