Commission superscribed by James VIII and subscribed by the Earl of Mar, to the Marquess of Tullibardine, appointing him Lieutenant-General of Forces, given at Avignon, 2 January 1717 With the death of James VII in 1701 his son led the Jacobite Cause. James VIII to the Jacobites, he was the Old Pretender to his enemies. After the Union he tried to take advantage of the government's unpopularity in Scotland.
