Medal (obverse), commemorating the Act of Grace of 1717This is the obverse of a silver medal commemorating George I's Act of Grace of 1717, when he granted a free pardon to all (with a few exceptions) who had been involved in recent Jacobite Risings. The medal was made by John Croker. The obverse has a bust of George I. The Latin inscription translates as 'George, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland. Defender of the Faith'. Jacobite risings of 1708, 1715 and 1719 seriously threatened the fledgling United Kingdom, but failed. The final rising, of 1745-6, was led by Prince Charles Edward.
