Plate, made in Kirkcaldy, FifeThis earthenware plate was made around the 1870s at David Methven & Sons' pottery at Kirkcaldy in Fife. It was produced for export to the south-east Asia. The plate's transfer-printed 'Damascus' pattern has a central scene of a horse-drawn, two-wheel chariot approaching a tent by a river. The town of Kirkcaldy on the north shore of the Firth of Forth was one of the major centres of Scottish pottery production. In the second half of the 19th century it had four separate factories.
