Coin (obverse), one-third groat, from reign of James VThis is the obverse of a silver one-third groat minted at Edinburgh between 1526 and 1539, during the reign of James V. The coin was worth six pence Scots. The obverse bears a crowned portrait of the king. The Latin inscription translates as: 'James V, by the Grace of God, King of Scots'. James V's reign saw the introduction of two new gold coins - the crown and the ducat. The latter was the first Scottish gold coin to bear a portrait. A new billon coin called the bawbee also appeared for the first time. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
