Gold 20 pound piece coin (reverse), the largest ever minted in 1576This is the reverse of a gold 20 pound piece minted at Edinburgh in 1576, during the reign of James VI. The 20 pound piece was the largest and heaviest gold coin ever minted. The reverse has a crowned shield of arms. The Latin inscription translates as: 'To spare the humble and subdue the proud'. The words are from Virgil's 'Aeneid'. The coins of James VI's reign are considered to have the most beautiful designs and most varied legends of all Scottish coins. After the Union of the Crowns of 1603, Scottish gold and silver coins closely resembled their English counterparts.
