Box (closed), made in EdinburghThis oblong silver box (pictured here closed) was made in 1899 by James Pears Hutton, a silversmith in Edinburgh. The box is set on four ball feet and has a separate lid. Both box and lid are decorated with low relief scenes from Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The scenes are variably signed and the plinth is engraved with 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. James Pears Hutton was active as a silversmith from at least 1862 when he had his shop at 63 New Buildings on North Bridge in Edinburgh. He was influenced by the pre-Raphaelite movement and produced several works notable for their depiction of figures. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
