It is probably from an object obtained in Italy and taken back to Scotland as a pilgrim's souvenir between 800 and 1250 AD. Piece of verde-antico from Balmerino, Fife, 800 - 1250 AD 'Verde antico' is a green porphyry floor and wall covering used by Roman and Byzantine rulers in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean.
