Shabti (back)A shabti is a model of a servant, buried with an ancient Egyptian in order to perform menial tasks in the Afterlife on behalf of the deceased. This example of faience was found at Hawara in Egypt. It dates from the Late Period (between 664 and 337 BC). This picture shows the back of the shabti. It is in the form of a mummy, with a basket slung over the left shoulder. Wealthy people in ancient Egypt were buried with a range of objects to help them in the Afterlife. These included religious amulets, food and drink, furniture, games, clothes, jewels, and servants to do the work. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
