Fashion plate, from La Mode IllustreéThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate illustrates two day dresses with hats and dates from 1886. It is signed, 'Huard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'. The bustles on both dresses are quite large and tend to arch up and out from the back. The skirts are draped and trimmed at the back into elaborate bouffants. The lady on the left is carrying a bunch of flowers and a parasol. The lady on the right is holding a fan. La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century.
