Soup plate (detail)This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate, the design for which was registered in 1853. The plate was exported to South East Asia and collected there. There were many variations in Bell's marks. This one consists of the pattern name 'VICTORIA SCROLL' between two fronds. Underneath are the company initials 'J. & M.P.B'. Incorporated in the mark is the registry mark, 10 March 1853. Bells started exporting by the 1860s. Their trade with South East Asia was particularly important.
