Washstand (open)This mahogany pedestal washstand was supplied to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery at around the time that the Gallery was built in 1891. It was used by members of staff in the offices. The washstand has an inset marble top which lifts to reveal a blue and white, transfer-printed, earthenware basin. There is small brass plug for the basin and dirty water could be drained from it to a jug placed beneath. Washstands like this, unconnected to a water supply, were still quite common around 1900.
