Sword blade mounted in wood scabbard and hiltSword blades were mounted in a white wood scabbard and hilt for storage. Swords were the most important weapon of the samurai, who wore two, one long and one short. The katana and wakizashi were worn thrust through the girdle, edge upwards. This is a blade for a long sword, katana, mounted in a white wood scabbard and hilt, shirasaya. The blade is signed Mutsu no Daijo Sansen Nagamichi, who worked in Kyoto in the latter half of the 17th century. Also inscribed with, a test, done in 1862.
