Fashion plate, from The QueenThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates an outdoor day dress and an evening dress for women and a dress for a young girl. It is dated 4 October, 1879. The fashion at this time was for solid, stiff textiles. Instead of soft flounces, there were knife pleats. Bows and sashes had a deliberately flattened appearance. First published in 1861, The Queen continued to issue hand-coloured plates until 1898, when it switched to full colour printing done by Waterlow in England.
