Fashion plate, from The QueenThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates two evening dresses and is dated 1 December, 1877. There was a great interest in the backs of dresses at this time and there were many fashion plates giving back views and profiles. Long elaborate trains emphasized this trend. At first, the Queen had little fashion content and its format was more like a newspaper. In 1862 it was taken over by William Edward Cox who introduced a stronger fashion element into the magazine.
