Fashion plate, from The QueenThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates women's wear and is dated 5 April, 1884. All three women are wearing day dresses and hats. The bustles on their dresses are quite exaggerated and tend to arch up and out from the back. The skirts are draped and trimmed at the back into elaborate bouffants. The Queen was originally founded in 1861 by Samuel Beeton, the husband of the famous Mrs Beeton who wrote the world-renowned cookery book. At first, the magazine had little fashion content and its format was more like a newspaper. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
