Fashion plate, from The Lady's MagazineThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Lady's Magazine, a London publication in circulation from 1770 to 1837. Dating from 1825, the plate illustrates a ball dress, 'Invented by Miss Pierpoint'. During this period, the high waistline of the previous 20 years slowly reverted back to its natural position. This called for the revival of the tightly laced bodice in order to achieve the desired small waist. The bell-shaped skirt was highly ornamented from the hem to knee. One of The Lady's Magazine's finest fashion plate artists was Thomas Stothard. He had produced plates for the magazine as early as the 1780s. His work was later published anonymously by another important fashion magazine, La Belle Assembleé. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
