Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des ModesThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. The plate dates from 1830 and illustrates women's wear from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'. The fitted satin coat with velvet cape is trimmed with rouleaux - strips of fabric loosely stuffed into tube-like shapes. The hat is made of satin. Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany.
