This medicine box was acquired by Captain Mark George Sprot of the 93rd (Highland) Regiment, when posted for service in the Indian Mutiny in 1857.
Overseas service carried a high risk of contracting disease and medicines could be in short supply. Officers used their own funds to protect themselves against the threat of illness.
Despite these precautions, Sprot was struck down with fever at Benares. He was forced to retire from the army due to ill-health in 1858, and died shortly afterwards.
