Medals, of Squadron Leader Archie McKellar, Royal Air ForceThese medals were awarded to Squadron Leader Archie McKellar, a World War II Royal Air Force fighter pilot. With a reputation for aggression and daring, McKellar personally shot down at least 17 enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain before he was killed in action in November 1940. The medals include the Distinguished Service Order awarded posthumously after McKellar was shot down by a German fighter over Kent; and the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, a double gallantry award for his success in air combat.
