Model, of minesweeper HMS Carstairs

This wooden model represents 'HMS Carstairs', a Hunt class minesweeper built in 1919 by Bow, McLachlan & Co of Paisley. The model is built to a scale of 1:48.

'Carstairs' had a crew of 73 men and officers. She was 70 metres long and had a displacement of 810 tons. Her triple-expansion engines gave her a speed of 16 knots. She was fitted with Yarrow boilers and could carry 185 tons of coal. She was originally armed with one four-inch and one 12-pounder gun.

The Hunt class was the largest class of First World War minesweepers and over 100 vessels were built. They worked in pairs, towing a steel cable between them from the gallows at the stern. This cable swept the water free of mines.
